The Gas Station/BBQ Shack

The Gas Station/BBQ Shack is up for sale.  It was called Bilbo's Texas Landmark.  And before that, Hills Prairie Grocery.

Click HERE for a pic of the store sent to me by a former owner when it was known as Bilbo's.  Take note of the gas pumps in the picture, which have since been removed.

It is located off of highway 304 in Bastrop County.  You will have to take highway 71 to Bastrop and turn onto 304 which heads towards Gonzales, TX.  But the Gas Station is a few miles down highway 304 and on the left.

Interestingly enough, just across the street from the Gas Station is a cemetery.  But I was disappointed to find that it was not the same cemetery as the one used in the film.

I helped Exploited Video to this location and they took some footage of it.  You can check that page out HERE.

Also, Paul Partain sent me an e-mail with an interesting story behind the window washer that appeared in this scene, played by Robert Courtin.

Tim,

Just took a look at the gas station on your web site.  You said it was raining off and on or something to that effect when you visited the gas station.  Same thing happened when we shot Chainsaw there.  In fact, the part for the guy who was washing the windshield of the van was created to cover the changing light that was causing problems for our camera crew.  At one point, the washer guy looks up at the clouds as the light changes......anyhow, I thought it was interesting that when you and Exploited visited the scene, you had the same experience......pp

The following are pictures of the inside of the gas station.  Not the main room where people normally go into to buy items.  But the side where all the action from the movie took place.  This area is labeled "Employees Only" on the door that is between the main room and this room.

These are pictures of the street as if you were standing in front of the gas pumps.  I thought these were important because this is the same view in which you see the van arrive and leave.

1.) BBQ Shack 1 -- The shack looks pretty much the same as it did 30 years ago. A nice old guy was out front selling honey but the store itself was closed down. Looks like it has been closed since last November (the fliers on the outside posterboard were mostly from late last year).
2.) BBQ Shack 3 (Rear Left) -- The rear of the place still looks the same, I guess.
3.) BBQ Shack 7 (rear Right) -- A view of the rear right side of the shack.
4.) BBQ Shack 8 (Front Trees) -- A long shot of the front left side of the shack. It was a gorgeous day outside but real creepy.
5.) BBQ Shack 9 (Pat Candie) -- A Black and White of me and my fiancé. The nice guy selling honey obliged.
6.) BBQ Shack 11 (Gas Pumps Painting) -- Here's a cool painting shot of the gas pumps out front.
7.) BBQ Shack 12 (Wind) -- A weird shot of me washing windows.  Not sure if the windshield needed to be cleaned or not, but a New York cleaning service could certainly clean up the shack a bit.
8.) BBQ Shack 13 (Inside) -- A blurry shot of the inside of the store, with strange reflection of me in window.

John Tullis
John made a visit to the BBQ/Gas station near Bastrop in May of 2004.  I think this is one of the best pics of the shack I've seen in a long time.
Click HERE to see it.  Here's another one of his.

A great way to get to this Texas gas station from the movie is by boat, preferably a Viking Yacht for sale.  They likely don't sell enough dieself fuel though to fill it up!
